Disclaimer: We were given a copy of Where’s the Party? via Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group to review as well as a copy to giveaway. As always, all opinions on the book are 100% my own.
Children’s book reviews are one of my favorite things about doing this blog. I think they are my kids’ favorite party about Mommy blogging too. Since Dr. Seuss week, Layla has been really into learning more about the authors and illustrators of books. She was very surprised to learn that Ruth Chan both wrote AND “drew” ‘Where’s the Party?’…what talent!
Ruth’s book is adorable- Georgie, a cute little city cat, loves to throw parties and eat cake (I think this might be the story of Layla’s life). He decides to throw a party one day but none of his friends can come. This story is both silly and sweet and my kids really loved it.
One of their favorite parts of the book was actually in Ruth’s bio. There is a picture of her with her cat, Georgie, and dog, Feta (also a character in the book)…the kids thought it was absolutely HILARIOUS that an author would write a book about her own animals. Maybe it was those bedtime induced giggles, but they were seriously cracking UP about it. They had a lot of questions so I sent them to the publisher thinking maybe they could send along to the author but not expecting much. Guess what? Ruth was SO very kind to answer the kids’ questions:
1. Do Georgie and Feta play together all day long?
If you have a cat or know someone who has a cat, you probably noticed they sleep a lot. And old dogs, too, they also sleep a lot. Well, Georgie is a cat, and Feta is an old dog (he is 12 years old, that’s 84 years old in people years!), so they are actually sleeping most of the day! But they do like to play together early in the morning and late at night, just before bed time. Their favorite game is the ‘Cleaning Game’ where Feta will lick Georgie’s face for at least five minutes to make sure Georgie’s got a nice clean face before it’s time for bed. Then they snuggle up together and fall asleep (and they both snore!).
2. Does Georgie really go around NYC and plan parties?
Georgie does love people and parties, mostly ones that take place at his own home. His mom usually ends up planning these parties, though, because he’s always falling asleep, Georgie’s also not very good at walking long distances, and gets carsick so he doesn’t get to go around NYC as much as he might like to.
3. Why are Georgie’s ears so short?
Georgie’s ears are actually normal-sized cat ears, but because his head is so round and fluffy, they look small! Sometimes he will pretend not to hear you, and that’s when I wonder if there’s too much fluff around his ears.
4. What is Georgie and Feta’s favorite kind of cake?
Feta loves any kind of food, and will eat ANY kind of cake! Chocolate is bad for dogs, so no chocolate cake for him. But if Feta could pick any cake to eat, it would definitely be a peanut butter cake. Or a pizza crust cake.
Georgie would choose a chicken cake. Or maybe a tuna cake. But you’d have to mash up the cake for him because he has no teeth!
5. Do Georgie and Feta like to invite kids to their parties? (I think my daughter just really wanted an invite to one of their parties LOL)
Georgie and Feta love having kids at their parties, but since they can’t travel as much (Feta doesn’t drive, and we can’t forget that Georgie gets carsick), their mom is throwing a lot of parties around NYC at different bookstores for them instead.
I can’t tell you how thankful I am to Ruth for answering their questions. Layla is so into writing, she even wants to write her own book about dogs (she’s been taking pictures of our dogs with my iPhone to get ready for her book haha!). She loves learning about the authors of her books so for Ruth to write back and answer her questions was VERY sweet and it made her day.
