Have you guys been seeing the lifestyle sessions/portraits all over Pinterest? I’m in LOVE with the idea of these and wish I could do more of them as a photographer. These sessions give us the opportunity to capture families in their natural environment, typically in their own homes. They are an “anything goes” type of session…just live life and let a photographer snap shots.
We pay to have “traditional” family pictures done every year. I really cherish those pictures because, outside of these sessions, we rarely have pictures of all four of us together. I spend a lot of time coordinating outfits, stressing about the weather, worrying about how the kids will cooperate…etc. We just had ours taken last week and the kids were a disaster. It’s stressful, who really enjoys getting pictures done?!
We have an amazing photographer who captures us perfectly. And we pay a lot of money for those pictures but you know what? When I look back at all our pictures from the year and put together my kids’ photo books, the paid for “traditional” photos are not my favorite. The candidate ones I’ve taken throughout the year are the ones that make me tear up or laugh. Those pictures are the ones that capture my kids the way THEY are.
I’m lucky enough to do this for my kids whenever I want. So I’m challenging other Mommas to think about doing a lifestyle type session for your next family shoot. And if you aren’t comfortable with the idea at least get your camera out and capture your kids at home. Slow down and take pictures at bath time, or making Saturday morning pancakes or when they are just plain being silly. Get the details- wild hair, bare feet, your messy living room…capture REAL life! It may seem chaotic now but someday we will forget what it was like to have toys scattered all over our living rooms and dried apple juice all over our kitchen counters.
And while I’m at it- please don’t forget to actually USE your photos! I love Shutterfly for photobooks– great quality, customer service and very reasonable prices.
