I’ve done a handful of posts on traveling with kids, including tips and tricks, over the last few years. Unless you have read this post, you might think I’m some kind of master of kid travel. I’m not. I hate traveling with my kids. End of story.
We are currently in Illinois visiting family. To say that our trip down here was rough is an understatement. It sucked. The amount of screaming and crying that took place was out of control. I never want to get in a car again.
We started this trip as prepared as we’ve ever been. Two large totes FULL of toys, activities, books…etc for the kids-
HOURS of movies and app fun on the iPad-
We were all smiles until we got about 1.5 hours away from home. We knew we were stopping at the 2 hour mark to visit the Grand Rapids zoo. We thought we’d run the kids hard there and then my inlaws would pick us up while my husband drove home so he could work through the week.
My poor in-laws drove us for about 5 hours out of the 7 hour trip and I don’t think they will be volunteering to that anytime soon. Pretty sure they’ve ever heard so much screaming in their lives. We THOUGHT my youngest would be worn out from the zoo and take a good nap in the car.
After approximately 24 hours of screaming he did finally fall asleep…
For about 20 FREAKING minutes out of the entire 7 hour trip (that was actually longer thanks to construction). This is how he ended up falling asleep, again, after another round of screaming. This picture was taken about 15 minutes from our final destination.
My sweet daughter was all smiles and SO good through the whole trip. Bless her heart, she has turned into a master traveler. I can only hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for her brother.
Traveling is tough on kids. Little did I know that the actual drive wasn’t going to be the end of my misery. My poor guy has had a ROUGH time sleeping since we’ve been away from home. He can’t wait to get back into his own bed.
Tomorrow we make the trip to Ash W’s house (about 3 hours) and then will head home Saturday (5.5 hours from there). Everyone send us happy/safe travel vibes. And sleep vibes…we could use those too!
