Let’s be honest for a minute- I am not a natural remedy kind of Mom. I give my kids Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen without batting an eye. Antibiotics? Yes please. And we’ve done our fair share of teething tabs, gas drops and breathing treatments as well. All of these things have worked well for us so why change a good thing? Well things have been working not so well lately for my poor son. He’s been sick for almost 2 months now and I had pretty much lost all hope.
It started off with what I thought was a cold or maybe even allergies as our weather broke. Within a few days his runny nose turned into a cough and pink eye. We got the pink eye taken care with eye drops (from the doctor of course!) of but the cough was getting worse so we took him in. Doctor was concerned at the sound of his lungs and his O2 levels so he was given a steroid shot and prescribed breathing treatments every 4 hours. He wanted to see him the next afternoon to check progress.
We went back to the doctor after a full day of breathing treatments (SO not fun…if you haven’t had the pleasure of giving your toddler a breathing treatment you are truly blessed in life) to hear that he sounded worse. All tests came back fine (no RSV or anything detectable) but they were very worried about the state of his lungs. We were prescribed an antibiotic, more breathing treatments and singular.
Antibiotics- check! Kicked the runny nose and fevers. Breathing treatments- check! Cough was still there but it was confirmed at his recheck appointment the following week that his lungs were sounding better. Singular- nope. I am convinced this is a devil’s drug. It gave my little guy night terrors like you wouldn’t believe and I was constantly having to peel him off the ceiling.
I made a call to the doctor pleading with him to reduce the breathing treatments and asking if we could stop the Singular. He told us to stop the Singular but because Jack’s lungs were in bad shape and his cough wasn’t really reduced he needed to keep on the breathing treatments.
All of that was within a 3 week time period. Fast forward another 4 weeks later and we were still dealign with the same cough and sleep issues. I posted a status on my personal FaceBook page asking my friends to pray for sweet Jack (and me). After getting no sleep for 7 weeks and coughing non stop we were at the edge of completely loosing it. He would never be healthy again.
I have always said I have the best friends EVER but the responses I got from that post made my heart swell. So many people offered suggestions, prayers and told me their personal stories of their kids’ lung issues. A few of my friends recommended I try essential oils. Normally I would laugh off this suggestion but desperate times call for desperate measures.
I was lucky to find a store specializing in natural remedies and oils in my tiiiiiny town. I walked in and wanted to turn and walk right back out. There were scents, crystals and candles everywhere. There was NO way this was going to work but I lugged my kid all the way over there to check things out so I needed to just DO IT.
The lady that helped me was SO nice and seemed very knowledgable. She recommended a “Sinus/Breathing” oil that consists of cinnamon, thyme, rosemary, peppermint and eucalyptus blue gum. Oooooooookay. She also handed me a night time balm to help him sleep. Ooooooooookay. I thought it would cost me a fortune but I walked out with these two items for under $20. I left a total skeptic but I was willing to try ANYTHING to help my little guy.
You guys. After 24 hours of using this stuff (still in combination with the breathing treatments) Jack’s cough was significantly reduced. I’m talking a MAJOR difference…like he went from coughing all day to just a handful of times when we went outside or he was running around crazy. Which by the way he hadn’t done since he’d been sick. He also slept ALL FREAKING NIGHT. What?! This had to be purely a coincidence. I was still a skeptic going into the next day.
At 48 hours out his cough was completely gone. We receded his breathing treatments from 6 times a day down to 2 by the 72 hour mark. Are you SERIOUS?! We have literally spent every bit of a thousand dollars on doctor’s appointments, breathing treatments and antibiotics and an $11 bottle of smelly oil is making him better?!
I know a lot of you reading this are still skeptical and that’s OK. I would be too but let’s talk about the sleeping issue for a minute. Jack has NEVER been a good sleeper. He took 20 minute naps until just a few months ago and has only slept through the night maybe 10 times in his LIFE. Since using the Badger Night Night Balm (and admittedly changing his routine/night waking pattern a bit…more to come on that later) he as been not only sleeping all night…he’s been sleeping until 8 freaking 30 AM! I will slather his entire body in this stuff as long as it works, I don’t care if it smells like rotting fish. Which it doesn’t, it is quite pleasant. You can actually purchase the same balm from Amazon for about $15 (for the larger jar) and it is worth every. single. penny.
I plan on looking more into essential oils. This stuff is the real deal. If this little blue vial of smells can turn this 7 week coughing plague around in 72 hours imagine what it could do for an oncoming cold. I’m exciting to learn more and share with the rest of you but I will promise not to turn into a witch doctor and curse anyone with voodoo for using antibiotics.
