Fabulous news for you nursing Moms out there- the IRS gave us yet another reason why breastfeeding is so awesome…(*sings*) TAX BREAK!
This year we can use FSA (flexible spending accounts…as a previous HR representative, if you don’t already participate in an FSA and you have the opportunity, DO IT) funds or receive a medical deduction towards breast pumps and lactation supplies. The catch with the medical deduction is that your TOTAL medical expenses have to be more than your 7.5% adjusted gross income. Not everyone will be able to use the deduction, especially if you didn’t have time to document all your medical expenses in the first place. But the FSA thing is huge…I wish I would have been able to take advantage of this when I purchased all my pumping goods.
The IRS is pretty vague on what you can/can not included in the “lactation expenses” category. The exact wording straight from their site states:
“You can include in medical expenses the cost of breast pumps and supplies that assist lactation.”
It sounds like the pump and all pump accessories (I would guess storage bags as well!) are included in this expense. I’d be a little careful about including things like nipple creams, pads, bras…etc. Of course, talk to a tax professional or someone knowledgeable about your FSA if you plan on taking advantage of these programs.
Thumbs up for the IRS! Happy tax season Moms!
