When do I drop the mattress??
When in doubt, drop the mattress. I promise it will be a better decision then NOT doing it and then having your baby launch themselves out of the crib.
YES…this is a true story that happened to my girlfriend, Kristy. Click HERE to read all about it.
I have another girlfriend who swore that her crib was lowered all of the way down, but her 9 month old son fell out…whoops…it was NOT lowered all of the way!
As soon as your baby starts to pull himself up, DROP IT. Drop the crib as low as it can it go!
I was talking to a friend this weekend about her son, who is 7 months old. He started to pull himself up in his crib but is very unsteady. She is a nervous wreak about him pulling himself up and falling backwards and hitting his chin or head. That is a very normal and valid concern! I don’t have much advice on that matter, other than to trust that I am sure he will be okay!
When to add toys??
It is recommended not to add toys or blankets to the crib until baby is one year old to prevent SIDS. After the age of one, the risk of SIDS reduces significantly since baby is able to sit up, roll over, and move a toy or blanket away from his face.
A safe alternative to adding toys to bed is having a mobile.
One of my favorites is the Ocean Wonders Musical Aquarium Crib Attachment.
My daughter is almost 2 years old. Over the past 3-4 months we have started putting her to bed with a blanket and now she insists upon bringing her babies to bed. She has 2 dollies and a stuffed dog. I feel secure in our decision that she is old enough to have a few comfort items and blanket to sleep with.
Do you have any horror stories about dropping the mattress??
How old was your baby when you allowed them to sleep with toys?
