My Fitness Pal has become my FAVORITE addiction.
I started My Fitness Pal when my daughter was four months old. I was not ready to start a “diet” but knew that I needed to start watching what I was eating a little more carefully.
I heard about My Fitness Pal through a friend. It is a free program that you can access online. With certain phones you can download the free app and have it at the tip of your fingers (literally).
I love this program, not only because it is free, but because it is a journal. When you set up your profile you determine how many calories you need to intake to reach your healthy weight loss goal.
Throughout the day I just record what I eat. It does not take more than one-two minutes per meal. There is a place where I can see how many fats, proteins, and carbohydrates I consumed to make sure I am maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. I also record when I workout so I can see how many calories I burned and make sure my caloric intake is higher that day.
I enter each item I put into my mouth, whether it is a healthy meal or McDonalds. I enter small items, such as a mini-bag of M&M’s or larger item, such a cookie. If I am not sure how many calories an item is, I will look it up before I put it in my body so I can make an educated decision. Many times I will say ‘no’, but if I really want it, I will cut back on another meal or workout to make up the calories.
As a nursing mom wanting to loose weight I needed to make sure I maintained a healthy amount of calories in my diet so my milk supply stayed plentiful, which can be a tricky balance. As discussed in a previous post, it is recommended that a nursing mom adds on 300 healthy calories per day.
Another advantage of My Fitness Pal is that you can have “friends” who will encourage you to log your daily calories, support you on your journey, and make sure you keep up your fitness goals.
There are lots of different programs out there to help you track your calories and food. I am also a huge fan of Weight Watchers, especially because of their meetings and accountability. My Fitness Pal just works for me at this time in my life!
