Here’s a random fact about me: I HATE taking pills. If I don’t chew something, I just can’t get it down. I know, I’m crazy. When I found out I was pregnant with L, I shuttered at the thought of taking a prenatal everyday. It looked like a horse pill and I just couldn’t see how I was going to get it down. I still gag just thinking about it.
Towards the end of my pregnancy, I was a pill poppin’ machine. My daily dose included 1 prenatal, 1 iron supplement, 2 blood pressure pills, and 2 Tylenol. I can now swallow 4 pills at one time without batting an eye. Impressed? Of COURSE you are!
I started my prenatal vitamin routine the night I found out I was pregnant. I would call that my first official baby purchase (besides the 4 other tests that I bought while I was at the store JUST to be SURE that I was pregnant). I remember standing in the vitamin aisle feeling totally overwhelmed. I just picked one with a pregnant women on the front and crossed my fingers that that’s what I needed. Turns out, vitamins aren’t too hard to screw up. WhattoExpect.com has a straight-to-the-point article on what to look for here.
The first 2 or 3 weeks of my pregnancy were pretty terrible. I couldn’t sleep at night which made me exhausted during the day and I was nauseous all the time. Normal 1st trimester symptoms right?!? Of course. At one of my first doctor’s appointments my doc asked me what time of day I was taking my prenatal vitamin. I told her in the evenings right before bed and she suggested I try taking them in the mornings with my breakfast. What a difference that made! I still was nauseous but not as much and I was able to sleep MUCH better in the evenings! Who knew?
Taking a prenatal is so important for both Momma and baby. Plus it makes your hair feel great and your nails really strong. So suck it up and knock it down!
